Research Keywords

Comparing the climate policies of several jurisdictions: Canada, US, Russia, Japan, Australia, China, and the European Union, working with a team of scholars from five countries on this project; tracing the evolution of Canadian climate policy over time; employing comparison, both over time and between jurisdictions, to
better understand the politics of instrument choice; conditions under which governments embrace market-based regulatory approaches rather than traditional regulation, spending, or voluntary/hortatory programs; understand how governments can make more effective policy choices to address climate change.

Past Research: Fallen under two broad themes, both of which relate to my current work on climate policy: explaining why governments choose the policies they do (drawing on cross-national comparisons); and evaluation of the efficacy of
various environmental policy instruments, including regulation, eco-labelling,
information dissemination, and voluntary programs.

Courses Taught Related to Climate Change Solutions

Collaborative Activities

Currently collaborating with Lisa McIntosh Sundstrom (UBC), Yves Tiberghien (UBC), Laura Henry (Bowdoin College, US), Kate Crowley (U Tasmania, Australia), Goerild Heggelund and Steinar Andresen (Fritjof Nansens Institute, Norway), and Miranda Schreurs (Free University of Berlin, Germany).

I have also collaborated in recent years with economist Werner Antweiler (Sauder School, UBC)on
various policy evaluations and cross-national comparisons of environmental policy performance.

Research and Collaboration Interests

My own background is interdisciplinary, with degrees in both chemical engineering and political science. As such, I am interested in how
scientific knowledge is translated (or not) in public policy decisions.
