PICS Internship — Bowen Island Municipality

This internship is hosted by the Bowen Island Municipality, with funding from the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions.

The Climate Action Intern will work hourly, up to 35 hours per week, with the Manager of Environment and Parks Planning to update the Climate Action Strategy. The intern will review the Strategy and Bowen Island Municipality (BIM)’s Community Energy and Emissions Plan to determine which actions have been completed and assess the feasibility of those that remain.

The Intern will lead stakeholder engagement (survey, open house, workshop), review regional resources and plans, identify opportunities for collaboration and recommend adaptation actions. They will draft the updated Climate Action Strategy and assist with presenting it to Council.

Additionally, time permitting, the Intern may participate in workshops, contribute to developing a climate communication strategy, or support other climate-related initiatives as directed by the Manager and Environment and Parks Planning.

Key responsibilities

  • Organize workshops, open houses and stakeholder engagement sessions
  • Liaise with other BIM departments, the community, stewardship groups and regional entities on climate action planning and initiatives.
  • Conduct research and draft reports for Council presentations
  • Attend committee or working group meetings, and conferences as needed
  • Keep accurate and detailed written and digital records

Knowledge and skills

  • Ability to interpret environmental bylaw, policies, and provincial & federal legislation
  • Awareness of the Emergency and Disaster Management Act and other related legislation
  • Ability to understand and interpret climate data
  • Strong research, communication, and organizational skills
  • Understanding of climate planning with a solid grasp of best practices and emerging trends

Desirable education, training and experience

  • A Bachelor’s degree in an environmental discipline or a relevant diploma or certificate
  • Must be a current full-time student at UBC, UVic, SFU or UNBC (per PICS funding requirements)
  • Graduate student preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe InDesign
  • Working knowledge of GIS
  • Experience with climate policy, survey development, community engagement and facilitation
