PICS Internship — City of Prince Rupert

This internship is hosted by the City of Prince Rupert, with funding from the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions.

The City of Prince Rupert is excited to partner with Simon Fraser University (SFU) and Selkirk College on a research project in a new and growing field of study funded by SSHRC. The City of Prince Rupert is looking for an enthusiastic intern to join their team and make a real impact!

Nature-based solutions (NbS) are at the forefront of climate change research, offering innovative ways to enhance the environment and community. This project focuses on Prince Rupert’s natural assets, exploring how NbS can provide essential services like wastewater filtration while boosting biodiversity, recreational opportunities, and economic benefits.

The intern will immerse themselves in the fields of Green Infrastructure and Natural Asset Management. They will have regular check-ins and work closely with City staff and esteemed researchers from SFU and Selkirk College, including Drs. Andréanne Doyon, Sean Markey, Cliff Atleo, Alison Shaw, and Sarah Breen. Throughout the internship, the intern will receive valuable guidance and mentorship in GIS, Asset Management, Community Engagement, and Community Planning. They will play a key role in developing the Natural Asset Inventory, gaining hands-on experience in Natural Asset classification and mapping, as well as municipal engagement processes.

Job summary

  • Support the development of a municipal Natural Asset Inventory.
  • Research Natural Asset Management (NAM) strategies and review existing NAM plans of other municipalities, including through the lens of placemaking and revitalization efforts.
  • Plan and carry out community engagement.
  • Prepare a series of reports that will form the basis for the NbS strategy report.
  • Design materials for community outreach and knowledge mobilization purposes (infographics, videos, social media posts, etc.).
  • Check in regularly with City staff and the research team.
  • Lead project management activities for the Placemaking Strategy and Natural Asset Inventory.

Qualifications

  • Must be currently enrolled as a master’s student at one of the following universities: SFU, UNBC, UBC, or UVIC.
  • Must have the necessary equipment and ability to work remotely from a location that complies with the City of Prince Rupert’s Remote Work Policy and meets all WorkSafeBC requirements.
  • Must have the ability to travel to Prince Rupert for 1-2 short visits to support community engagement and fieldwork.
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Effective information synthesis skills.
  • Ability to think critically and problem-solve.
  • Demonstrates initiative.
  • Experience with facilitation is an asset.
  • Experience with GIS is an asset.
  • Time management skills.
  • Previous experience conducting research is an asset.

Compensation and benefits

  • Hourly wage: $30.32 per hour for 400 hours over 16 weeks.
  • Travel allowance: $2,500 for travel, stay in Prince Rupert, and other associated project costs.
  • Benefits: Not eligible for a benefits package.

Additional information

  • Remote work required: Prior to commencing remote work, you must review and sign the City’s Exempt Staff Remote Work & Remote Health & Safety Policy, which includes the Remote Work Agreement. Provided you meet the conditions outlined in the policy, you will be eligible for this positon and to work remotley.
  • Contract Position: This is a contracted position that is eligible to be a service contract with the successful candidate.
