Job description
The Climate Co-op Student Intern role is an opportunity within the Social Purpose Office to contribute to meaningful projects that support the transition to a low-carbon economy while developing valuable skills in research, data analysis and climate best practices. In this role, the intern will create and populate a climate resource centre, a centralized intranet hub for climate-related information for Coast Capital’s employees. The intern will work closely with the Climate Action Manager to support the development of resources for employee engagement in climate initiatives, review best practices in climate disclosures, and conduct a market scan of climate incentives and sustainable finance opportunities to support Coast Capital members and the organization’s climate goals.
Accountabilities
- The Climate Co-op Student Intern will engage in various research and analytical tasks contributing to Coast Capital’s climate strategy
- Create an internal climate resource centre for employees with relevant climate-related information
- Support in engaging employees in climate action
- Conduct a market scan of Canadian policies, incentives and rebates relevant to Coast Capital members to support climate action towards a low-carbon economy transition
- Produce an overview of the best practices in climate disclosures of Canadian Financial Institutions

A typical day may include:
- Collecting and analyzing data on climate policies, financial products and services, incentives and rebates
- Conducting comparative research on Canadian Financial Institutions
- Supporting the development of employee engagement resources
- Researching sustainable finance opportunities and potential opportunities to align business lending practices
- Assisting in preparing presentations and summary reports of research for internal stakeholders
- Organizing the internal climate resource centre
Skills the intern will build:
- Research & policy analysis: Gain hands-on experience analyzing policies, financial products, and market trends related to sustainability and decarbonization
- Data analysis & reporting: Develop proficiency in compiling, organizing, and presenting complex information from various sources in Excel and written reports
- Climate disclosure insights: Deepen understanding of how financial institutions integrate climate-related risks and opportunities into their operations
- Communication & employee engagement: Enhance ability to present research findings clearly and concisely for diverse audiences
Skills and qualifications
- Eligible students must be enrolled – or accepted for enrolment – in a full-time undergraduate or graduate program at one of the four PICS partner institutions: UVIC, UBC, SFU or UNBC. Students must either be returning to complete their degree programs following the internship or have completed their programs the semester prior to the start of the internship
- Knowledgeable about the field of sustainability with a focus on climate change
- Experience or interest in sustainability, finance, economics or policy analysis is an asset
- Good research and analytical skills
- Good written skills
- Solid data skills and comfortable using spreadsheets
- Solid organizational skills
The expectation for working hours is 37.5 hours per week full-time (Monday to Friday)
