PICS Internship — Northern Health

This internship is hosted by Northern Health, with funding from the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions.

Position summary

The Climate Change and Health intern will explore the climate and health communications landscape and develop a platform for Northern Health to showcase their climate and sustainability initiatives. The intern will facilitate mutual learning and sharing with the communities Northern Health serves by creating innovative spaces and using diverse media. The interns work will help share knowledge, foster collaboration, and inspire meaningful action. The intern will be instrumental in advancing Northern Healths climate and sustainability efforts, identifying capacity-building needs, and enhancing support for community partners. This position is time-bound and focused on achieving significant impact within a defined period.

The hourly rate for this position is $20.66 to $30.48 per hour, and will be based on education, training, experience of similar positions.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled – or accepted for enrollment – in an upper level undergraduate program or full-time Masters or PhD level program in Communications, Environmental Science, Geography or other related field, and available for a 13-16 week full-time internship or placement.
  • Skilled in developing and implementing communication strategies related to climate change and health.
  • Experienced in creating content for various platforms, including social media, websites, reports, and using innovative mixed media platforms.
  • Courses completed in climate science, environmental health, public health communication, media studies, or related fields are considered assets.

Skills and abilities

  • Strong understanding of climate science and the health impacts of climate change.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Enthusiastic about learning and applying communication strategies to inform and influence public and policy decision making.
  • Experience in project coordination and partner engagement.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Northern B.C. geography and issues is an asset.
  • Ability to read, review, and reference scientific information to various and diverse audiences, including policymakers and health professionals.
  • Proficiency in using digital tools and platforms for communication and outreach.
