Forest Carbon Modelling Analyst

Byron Smiley is a Forest Carbon Modeling Analyst with the Canadian Forest Service Carbon Accounting Team, part of Natural Resources Canada in Victoria, BC. He received his bachelor’s degree in Geography in 2012 and master’s degree in Geography/Forest Carbon Analysis in 2015 from the University of Victoria.

His research includes spatially-explicit carbon budget modeling, both historical reconstruction to determine the impact of past forest management on current carbon budgets as well as developing future projections to investigate optimal management options for climate change mitigation. For more than four years he has helped develop spatially-explicit forest carbon modeling projects that integrate the Carbon Budget Model of the Canadian Forest Sector 3 with remotely sensed data.
