Are you a student who wants to contribute to climate solutions during your co-op or summer job? Apply for an internship funded through the 2023 PICS Internship Program.
From assisting First Nations with climate change adaptation and food security to working on BC’s disaster, climate risk and resilience assessment or exploring the co-benefits for climate and health action in northern BC, PICS internships are creating exciting employment opportunities to take meaningful climate action across a range of sectors, disciplines, and issues.
A record 21 PICS internships are available to students this year, with employers in wide-ranging fields. Students in various disciplines can apply, depending on what each employer plans to achieve with the internship. Review the list of employers and internship topics here.
PICS internships provide $12,000 to support hiring a university student at organizations pursuing climate change mitigation and adaptation research, planning or implementation.
Internships provide students with vital experience and exposure in a competitive job market, while helping employers advance projects focused on climate solutions.
Internships last at least 13 weeks (or an alternative arrangement that distributes an equivalent number of total hours.) Employers may top up this contribution to provide an appropriate wage for the student’s level of education or experience.
Eligible students must be enrolled, or accepted for enrollment, in a full-time undergraduate or graduate program at one of the four PICS partner institutions: the University of Victoria, the University of BC, Simon Fraser University or the University of Northern BC. Students must either be returning to complete their degree programs following the internship or have completed their programs the semester prior to the start of the internship.
Students can apply for these internships through their university’s career centre or co-op program.

“I encourage all students interested in climate action to consider applying,” says PICS Executive Director Dr. Ian Mauro. “The future is about finding meaning in our lives and work that contributes to both our communities and the climate. A PICS internship can help do just that!”
